On Going Viral
Assalamualaikum.
Yesterday, I was happily writing an article for Hijabi Mag when I decided to check my instagram account. To my shock, it was flooded with messages, mentions, tags, comments, new followers and so on. Upon reading them all, I was worried upon learning that somebody is using my photos for her/his advocacy instagram account.
I immediately reported the account to instagram. However, 19 hours afterwards, one photo of mine is still in that account. I can't believe that they have been using my photos for more than two months now.

I have also commented on the photos that it wasn't me and tweeted on Twitter about the incident where more than 500 people retweeted already. Astro Malaysia already posted an article about this. Alhamdulillah, they are trying to correct the misconceptions.
What saddens me about this incident is that my fellow Muslims are so abrupt at judging the photo saying that I am a disgrace to Islam without even investigating. Seriously!!! Learn to get your facts first.
With all that said and done, I want to thank the people who took time to investigate and search the photo on google images, especially the ones who were so concerned and were flooding my notifications just so I would be able to see and read for myself.
Again, I am not involved with that freebleed account. Who is so crazy to go out with stains on the skirt or pants? Gross!
I do hope this stops now.

I am aware that my blogging would soon come to a point where somebody would use my photos. However, I never imagined that my photo would be used for a crazy advocacy. What saddens me about this incident is that my fellow Muslims are so abrupt at judging the photo saying that I am a disgrace to Islam without even investigating. Seriously!!! Learn to get your facts first.

Whoever is doing this must be really crazy!!! Will share this so that more will become aware that this is not you. I hope the fake accounts will be put down soon.
ReplyDeleteAww thats horrible! I'm glad the account was reported. People like that sound absolutely ridiculous. :\
ReplyDeleteSorry tadi sy viralkan cerita pancake ke fb dan bila sedar ia fake, saya telah delete
ReplyDeleteOMG Kai!!! I hope you're okay now emotionally :(
ReplyDeleteOh no this is crazy! Although I think this is a part of blogging world and some will come across similar scenarios one way or another, it's very unnecessary! What is it basically advocating that are against muslim beliefs?
ReplyDeleteIt's incredible that some people would do that! Glad to hear it is all ok now.
ReplyDeleteOnce an image is posted in a blog, there is a great chances that it would be pirated, used or utilized for personal, review or commercial used. It seems difficult to correct it immediately or retrieve that picture of yours. There is a suggestion that if possible make a watermark in your photo, so it could be a strong evidence to claim it later and find necessary legal case against those plagiarist.
ReplyDeleteHow terrible! I'm sorry you had to go through this.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry this had to happen to you. Thankfully there were indeed people who did the right thing and verified the facts and you were able to do something about it. As a blogger, plagiarism is a constant threat. Hopefully better measures can be implemented soon across the web to counteract this.
ReplyDeleteOH MY! im sure that this must be a traumatising experience for you. But all i can say is for you to be strong. Theres always people who try to bring you down, but you must stand up and fight.
ReplyDeleteBad people have done much to damage other people....what a tricky lives for them. Just correct it and start anew.
ReplyDeleteOh dear... that's a horrible experience to have gone through. Thank God it's rectified. If it helps, watermark your photos ;)
ReplyDeleteOh gosh. That's the worst thing ever to happen, because people will think it's you, even when it's not you saying!
ReplyDeletehopefully this account gets removed very soon! people using other peoples pictures are a common thing now :/
ReplyDeleteOh my, such a horrible experience on Instagram. This is one of the reasons I rarely post my picture on social media for the public and why my husband and I don't post pics of our kids ever, as well. It's just sad that there are people who do these things.
ReplyDeleteOh dear I am sorry this happened to you. I can imagine how you felt :/
ReplyDeleteThis is so unethical for people to do this but have seen lot of established people copying the photos. Hope you are feeling better now.
ReplyDeleteWhat a crazy impostor! I hope Instagram solves this problem soon!
ReplyDeleteWhoever the person behind that is so horrible! My photos were also used by other people but not as bad as the one who did that to you. :(
ReplyDeleteSad to hear that you've been into this horrible experience. Nowadays, lots of stupid people are doing harm on others by doing such act like what had happened to you.
ReplyDeleteThat's really frustrating. People should respect other people's copyright on photos. It's worst that they used it in bad taste.
ReplyDeleteThis is so scary, lucky you detected this than never. I hope it will stop.
ReplyDeleteI am sorry to hear this, on the positive note though, it makes you realize that you've been noticed. However, no one would wish to be labeled a disgrace. I hope no more problems like this will be encountered in the future. Don't quit blogging. Keep up your spirit! You're a blessing to humanity and not otherwise. Never forget that.
ReplyDeletewow! I am sorry you have to go through this. I swear people have nothing better to do.
ReplyDeleteThis is such a crazy and malicious thing that happened to you. I hope you can straighten these matters out with Instagram. Can't they block it from their end?
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear it, social media nowadays is getting crazy. Keep your head up.
ReplyDeleteThat's just totally wrong. Whoever did this must be punished. I'm sure it would be hard to track him/her down but hopefully he/she will be named and should have a public apology! Shame on him/her!
ReplyDeleteGosh, there are so many identity thieves these days, reasons why we should always be careful and alert with our information, pictures when sharing in social media networks.
